WordPress site experiencing performance issues to the point that I cannot ssh into the VPS. What tools are at my disposal to prove this isn’t a theme or WP issue?

This could be a ddos attack but the only thing I’m seeing in the logs is a handful of search engine bots having a hey day with the uploads directory. When working with the hosting tech support they manually rebooted the VPS and initially said, “…runaway process..” but then “ah, everything is okay.” and it seemed better for 24 hours.

Site is on PHP7.4, WordPress6.2.
