WordPress site owner here. I hired someone on Upwork to change the fonts on my theme, and he made the changes in the theme file editor > stylesheet.css – am I right in thinking this will get overwritten if the theme gets updated?

As per title. I asked him several times as he was working through the process how specifically he was changing the fonts, but never got an answer.

Changes are in production now and look good but the only place I can see the added fonts is in Appearance > Theme File Editor, directly in style.css, and definitely not in the “Additional CSS” area.

I know very little about wordpress from a DEV standpoint, but I have heard people saying that you can’t make changes directly to a theme or you will lose them when you update the theme.

I can’t see anything that indicates he used a child theme – if I look in wp-content/themes, I see only folders for the two themes that are installed (the pro version of the theme I’m using and the free version that I have never uninstalled).

Is there anything/anywhere else I should check? And am I right in understanding that his changes will get lost if I update the theme? The theme is updated regularly so just not updating it is not a possibility.

    Classic Upwork dEvElOpEr.

Yup, you’re going to need a child theme. Make him do it again, properly.

  2. Well on UpWork? that’s really a low quality work and you should raise concerns, I hope others have made it clear to you how important child theme is for customisation
