WordPress threat to web career?

[ad_1]

**To start with, some background information about me:**

My first computer was Windows 95, where I went on to develop a passion for all things tech and never stopped learning and exploring that world. I was about 14 years old, I’m now in my mid 30’s, born and raised in the USA. I have started and ended multiple businesses, some making over $250k a year and others only putting me into debt. All of them have revolved around the internet and technology. I have worked on hundreds of websites and many different platforms and technologies, some of them being my own, but the majority being clients or friends/family of mine. Currently I work as a freelance web designer / developer (I just use the term creator), specializing in SEO for local businesses, simply because its the best option available to me at the moment and allows me to earn enough money to take care of my responsibilities and generate passive income giving me time to explorer other sources of income and passion as I am trying to get out of the service industry and move into something else.

**My thoughts on the WordPress trend:**

Many people think the vets of the web industry don’t like wordpress because it threatens their jobs/career. While I know this isn’t entirely true, there certainly is some truth to it but not in such a simple and direct way. Personally, I do not see platforms/SaaS like WordPress having a direct impact on my income but actually the opposite at the moment. I’m all for companies hiring or implementing the cheapest and easiest website and marketing campaign because it makes me look good and my job much easier when I’m hired to compete against them. Not to mention theres a massive demand for someone to come fix something built by someone who didn’t know what they were doing, and thats always a steady source of employment if I’m hard up for another gig.

However, I do fear when AI becomes more advanced to have human level reasoning and experiences, which isnt far off. I’m certainly not investing much more into this field and working on getting out of it. There is clear and obvious macro socioeconomic impact from the growing trend and ability to DIY or the simplifying of services that once required high degrees of knowledge and experience, not including the problem AI will introduce upon widespread adoption.

The bulk of people are failing to support the community, and in turn, the community will not be able to support them, hence why the number of side hustles and DIY is growing; people are broke. When people can no longer compete, or competition becomes too much, this is bad for *everyone*. The very act of trying to save money and cut corners everywhere you can only serves to hurt you. The number of people who can’t afford to hire a professional will only grow and compound the problem. It’s not hard to see that eventually this will reach a point that I can no longer earn a living doing this.

Services like wordpress and the people it attracts and ideaology it promotes is slowly eroding society by framing the removal of dependence on another as innovation, freedom and empowerment. Changing of the times is said with pride and conceitment. The reality is that when you fast forward 10 years, it only serves to enslave those very people as time passes. Your intelligence is valuable, and you are giving that away to be handled by a machine or algorithm.

Everything and everyone is connected in some way, past present and future, and we are being encouraged to severe those connections and live a solitary and selfish lifestyle through the promotion of competition while increasing supply and reducing demand. I wonder how the famly unit is doing these days for the bulk of people? What are your relationships like compared to the relationships of the generations before you when they were your age and how does that relate when comparing the economy as well?

The majority of innovation I see only leads to serve a few at the expense of the many. I don’t bother bringing this up very often, if ever, because theres little one can do to stop it at this point other than look in the mirror and starting there, but I do get annoyed that ignorance acts as a shield from accountability among those who are creating such a bleek future. People always care when its too late and theres always someone else to point the finger at or a perspective you can adopt to avoid the truth.
