Words of Advice for a Bloated WooCommerce Site

[ad_1]

Hey ya’ll,

I was brought on to help with the SEO, design, and customer conversion for a small jewelry store. The owner has gone through a couple of agencies and they’ve made an expensive mess. Lots of plugins, bad SEO, and the site has generated 0 conversions. I found duplicates of the homepage to “better the SEO”– this is what the owner was told by one of the agencies. I’ve been on for a couple of weeks, and today he brought up scrapping the site and making something new.

What concerns me is dropping the SEO score and making a bigger mess. I know sunk costs fallacy, but he’s nervous about not creating a profit on his site. We’re both in it to make money, but he’s a good dude and we’re about the same age and we both want to succeed.

Feel free to comment or PM me for any questions or clarification. Thank you for your wisdom.

  1. I find scrapping and starting from scratch often actually takes less effort than sorting through an existing site and fixing everything wrong. If it’s really that bad, and has passed from hand to hand, starting fresh is more than likely the best course of action.

You can export and import the WooCommerce products to save yourself the effort of recreating them, and just follow best practices for website building for the site as a whole. KISS principle applies..

  2. One thing that comes to mind is that if the website has zero conversions it may not be due to bad devs. Lots of websites with bad design do decently with conversions and manage to sell. For sure a better designed/developed website will raise its conversion rate A LOT. But if now it’s at an absolute zero, the problem may be somewhere else.

About risks of damaging the SEO score: how many visits does the website get now?
Are you an SEO specialist and you’re not sure about the development side?
