Thanks for the question. Yes, tables of that size will indeed benefit from indexing. The individual improvements on your posts table will not necessarily be noticeable, but they add up. On your postmeta, you should see some improvement.
As a rough yardstick, I think 5,000 rows or so is a good threshold.
