WP Generated 768px WebP Image Much Larger than 1200px Original

[ad_1]

I’m uploading compressed WebP images to WordPress and the medium large (768x402px) version generated by WP is much bigger in size than the orginal file (which is 1200pxx628px). Why is that? I’m not using any optimization plugin, but experimented with Imagify and got the same results.

  1. First off, let’s double-check your image optimization settings. Sometimes, plugins or settings in your content management system, like WordPress, can inadvertently mess with your image compression settings. Head over to your media settings and make sure your image optimization settings are set to compress images efficiently without sacrificing quality.

Next, let’s consider the possibility of server-side compression. Your hosting provider might be automatically compressing your original images when they’re uploaded, but not applying the same level of compression to the WebP versions. This could result in larger file sizes for the WebP images. Reach out to your hosting provider to see if this could be the case, and if so, ask them to adjust their compression settings accordingly.

Another thing to check is the quality settings for your WebP conversion. Sometimes, plugins or scripts used to generate WebP images allow you to adjust the quality level of the resulting images. Lowering the quality level slightly can often reduce file sizes without sacrificing too much image quality.

Lastly, consider using a different image optimization plugin or tool. Sometimes, switching to a different plugin or tool can yield better results, especially if the one you’re currently using isn’t playing nice with WebP images.

By exploring these options, you should be able to get to the bottom of why your WebP images are larger than the originals and find a solution that works for you. And hey, if you need a hand with any of these steps, I’m here to help. Cheers!
