wp_posts() – author vs. post_author

Hello.
Please, can anybody explain me why for a function:
get_posts() I need to use “author” instead of “post_author”?
..in the wp_posts table, there is a “post_author” column, not an “author” column…

so why is so that?
Why I am not able to use post_author?
