WTF? Can no longer comment on scheduled posts.

Hello:

I’ve been working with WordPress for about 4 years now and it’s been a journey to say the least, but also a great opportunity to develop new skills. This is my first foray into Reddit and it’s great to see a forum dedicated to WordPress-related issues.

Within the past couple of weeks or so I’ve run into an issue on several of my WP sites where I can no longer add comments to a scheduled post. That was always one of my favourite features of WP and I would often have posts lined up days in advance with all my comments added in advance.

This problem is particularly vexing because it’s happened across all of my WP sites. My main site is at least two versions behind on WP because we ran into conflict issues with plugins that caused critical functionality to stop working. My other sites have various newer versions of WP installed. I have a whack of plugins on each site including several that are common to all sites, and I have been updating these plugins regularly on most of my builds.

All of my sites are built on Themify, a platform I’ve invested a lot of time and effort into getting it to provide exactly the look and feel I want on each site. It’s not been without its challenges, but the people at Themify are reliable at coming up with solutions, often within a few hours of posting.

Several of my sites rely on wpDiscuz, which has been a great comment solution for our forum site, but some of my other sites don’t have and never had wpD installed, so while that plugin — and its myriad addons and regular updates — was my initial suspect, it doesn’t explain why I’m seeing the same issue on the sites that have never had wpD on them. That said, I did start a thread on wpDiscuz community forum and one other user replied that they have the same problem, which began with the wpD v.7.6.11 (10/19/2023) update and that the last working version of wpD was v.7.6.9/10 released 9/25/2023 and 9/26/2023).

One other bit of possibly related information: For the longest time our sites would just show the typical “Add title” when posting on the back end form, then a few months back it spontaneously started showing “Auto Draft” instead, which I found annoying. When this latest problem cropped up, the back end form started once again showing the “Add title” placeholder.

So a bit more on the back end posting form: As soon as I open it, I see the “Update” button at the top right, which seems to be how it behaves when Auto Draft is enabled, but as I pointed out above, the form isn’t showing the “Auto Draft” placeholder. So it seems to think it is both in and not in Auto Draft mode at the same time. This “Update” button remains after setting the schedule, rather than changing to the “Schedule…” button. Further, if I click the Update button only once and leave the scheduled form the article is saved as a Draft not a Scheduled post. I have to click the Update button a second time before leaving the form (or go back into the form and click it again) before it will show the article as Scheduled.

In the past once I had set the schedule I would go to the article preview and would be able to add comments as if it was already posted. Now I can’t do that on WP 6.1, 6.3.2 or 6.4 . I have done the usual purging of caches, both on the sites and my browser. I’ve tried it on multiple devices with the same results on every platform. I have deactivated all the plugins, reverted to a default theme and still the error arises. I feel like I have stepped into an alternate dimension where comments have never been allowed on scheduled WordPress posts. Am I going insane, or can someone help shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance.
