Access to client’s theme files, etc.

So, I came back to WordPress development after 6 years and just got hired for some changes on an existing WordPress site.

All the experience I have is from building sites and custom themes from scratch, but oddly enough I never had to work on an already existing WordPress site, so I’ve got a few question about it.

What do I need from the client? I used to get FTP access back in the day to upload stuff after working on it locally. Is that still a thing? Is there any normal/recommended practice to “copy” the client’s website on your local machine to work on it if you don’t have FTP access?

I’ve read something about import/export. Can I import/export the entire site to set it up locally?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Admin account, FTP access and maybe hosting access for the database.

I use “All-in-One WP Migration” to move sites around but I think WP Vivid has a good free option for backing up / migration – these can move a site with only admin dashboard access.

Local WP is great for setting up eh.. WP locally.
