I just installed a fresh local site for testing the upcoming WP 6.3 and attempting to follow along with the suggested docs. When I get to the Typography section of the styles-overview doc, there is no hint on how to add a new font other than select “Iter”. Google search brings up a confusing list of plugins and old classic theme suggestions, so what is the best practise for adding a locally hosted Google font to the Styles section of WP 6.3?
Built-in functionality to access Google Fonts (and manage a library of fonts is something that is coming hopefully in WordPress 6.4. If you’re interested you can follow the development here.

In the meantime – the best solution of loading a custom font for your site to use (regardless of theme) is to use one of those plugins you found when searching. The one i’ve seen most people using is this one:

I’m really trying to avoid plugin-hell for now, so I will go with “Inter” for consistent font rendering across browsers and cross my fingers that 6.4 provides inbuilt local font management. If I can’t survive that long without my preferred font(s), then I will certainly try the plugin you suggested.
I guess another option would be to copy how the Inter TTF font has been added to the 2023 theme and manually try to emulate that setup, but there is probably some hidden CSS involved, and I’m not sure if I want to dig that deep while I am learning how to use the 6.3 block editor.
