Thank you for reaching out!
One work-around could be to enable (the premium) mail-staging mode (which will only log the email but not attempt to send it), immediately after enabling the mail function. At least this way no emails will be lost (because logged emails can always be sent again).
Having said that, I will take your suggestion into account for a future update.
