I've been running a news type site in a small niche for years and wondering what tips you may have in general?
~I am wondering about theme choice. I currently use Kadence – but I don't like it for a news theme.

As for growing—without knowing your location, or what in “sports” you cover. If it is local sports, be THE sports guy–engage on Social Media, make sure you are posting a lot. Cover the high school games, the college games and the pro games for your area.
Also look to maybe partner with another local larger site … Not a fan, but you could spin your article thru AI and send it to other sites to use at no cost, and the final line is “For more detailed analysis, visit [yoursite.com](http://yoursite.com)
Iam using Jnews theme. Comes preloaded with their own plugins which give a classy home page look for a news website or a multi niche affiliate oriented website.
Also how often do you post. For sports do you follow the Google trends as a reference in your target country to understand the number of search requests made. Iam not sure if it can work well but read this trick once on neilpatel or wpbegginer.
