Any precautions I should take if I hire a freelancer?

[ad_1]

Current site is on wix. Want to get it redone in WordPress with some design changes. Considering wether its worth the time to learn WP. The website is for my business.

In terms or security or anything else, if they are building the site off the main domain, from scratch, should I take any precautions, any security concerns?

  1. give them just the access they need, back up your site before they start, and make sure you have a clear contract for what you expect

  2. Learning WP is a process and can take a lot of time to do it very well. Consider if you’ll be able to pull of a site you’re pleased with in a suitable timeframe for your business

If you go the freelance route, have them furnish a contract outlining the site requirements as you both understand them, ask for details of their process, and also specify the deliverables and a timeline. Also understand their revision limitations so you know how rounds of edits work.

They should develop the website away from your main domain, then do the switch of DNS once you have approved the new site.

Make sure that if they send you a staging website that it’s password protected so it doesn’t get indexed by search engines during development.

Also, make sure they keep the URLs the same if possible. If links change for the new site, require that redirects are put in place so users aren’t faced with 404s from already indexed pages. Plan for this approach at the start of the project

  3. Make sure you own the server the are building on and you give them a reduce set of permissions under their own user account

  4. This is going to be long…
If you’re dependent on the site to work from day one. I’d say, hire a professional to set it up for you. It will take you a long time to learn all the basics to have a professional and secure website using WordPress.

Then have them set up what we call a staging site or a mirror site for you to practice on while you learn the ropes.

WordPress is loved by hackers, so the proper security like a firewall and other security measures must be set up correctly from the get-go. So does SEO (Search engine Optimization).

In terms of securing yourself and your business, do your diligence, contact more than one designer, get quotes, And be as specific as possible about your needs and expectations. If possible check them out using trustpilot. Then write a contract with the promised amount and expected timeframe.

Now be aware that setting up a really good website takes time and will cost money. Designers willing to do it for almost free, will only give you approximately what you already have in wix.

I used to try and compete for small website design contracts. But are now only taking on clients who are ready to pay for what they get. I would never build a website without the above mentioned attention to security. Setting it up correctly will save you a whole lot of worry later on. It’s better to have it done properly than poorly.

    One last thing:
Wordpress plugins (aka functionally) very often costs quite a bit of money. Many plugins offer free starters, but limit functions. So make sure the designer you choose offer maintenance of the plugins and site security. Because your wordpress site will need regular maintenance.

  5. It’s more important learning the difference between hosting, domain, email. And perhaps a bit of marketing – SEO, paid ads, etc. I find some business owners think build a site and they will come – not so. Your site should at least do 1 of 3 things: drive sales, drive leads or drive bookings. Like others have said, you should have a contract and clearly defined project scope for everyone’s sanity.
