Any risks when using an old theme?

Let’s say I have a theme that is a few years old. It is no longer supported by the developer. However, everything is apparently working just fine. Should I hire a developer to “update” it or should I wait to see if any issue develops before doing that?

FYI, it’s a clean minimalist magazine theme with few (if any) built-in plugins that I use. Mostly just a text-based site with ~10 total outside plugins from .org directory.

  1. Yes, it’s risky. Both in terms of security and it not being compatible with current versions of WordPress and PHP. General rule of thumb with anything to do with WP is don’t use anything that’s abandoned or hasn’t received an update in > 12 months.
