Has anyone else noticed a *massive* uptick in spam over the past few days? I don’t receive many comments or contact form messages — maybe two or three per month, if that — and when I do, they’re usually genuine. But for the past few days I’ve been absolutely inundated with spam. I think I’ve received 20+ messages (sent via my contact form) today alone.
I haven’t updated my site or even posted a new blog entry recently, so I don’t think it’s anything I’ve done. Am using captcha, Akismet, etc., which have always worked pretty well, but are suddenly completely ineffective. Has something changed recently?

It’s possible that spammers added your website to their database. Recently, our anti-spam service (OOPSpam) let us know about a new Distributed Spam Wave from multiple IPs. Perhaps your website were/is part of it too.

I’ve noticed span can come in waves sometimes. Akismet may catch on if you report it. But I haven’t noticed any sudden changes in usual spam levels.
