I want to make food e-commerce my niche as a web dev and looking for help identifying where to start.
I’m trying to get more comfortable building and/or fixing sites that have some sort of food ordering functionality attached.
This post isn’t necessarily wordpress-specific as I’m open to using things like shopify and wix. Really I just want to know what concepts to be familiar with, what tools to use, how to use them, etc. The goal is to be able to walk into a restaurant, pitch them on having me build/fix their site, and actually know what I’m talking about.
Is there anyone on here that has experience working with restaurants? How would you recommend getting started?

High end restaurants I can see wanting a custom site/solution as well as SEO. For small / new there’s a lot of competition in that space bc of services like Toast, Clover, etc. Many new restaurants don’t have much money so they tend to go with systems that are as affordable as possible which often is associated with their POS system. At a minimum, I’d assume most restaurants want door dash, Uber eats, etc integrated.
I do have pizza restaurant clients that do their own delivery which might be good to target too.
We work with restaurants. margins are thin except for larger chains we’ve worked with so that of course affects their budgets with us.
Also if you want to compete with the big ordering platforms I suspect you won’t have much luck convincing them to move away from Toast or similar as those offer end-to-end service for their POS, online ordering; backoffice stuff, gift cards, and hardware. unless you have a very compelling alternative.
I have worked with agencies that specialize in building frontends to Olo based on their APIs. That (or creating your own SaaS ordering platform and everything that goes along with that) are the only ways I can think of to compete in that space.
