Best way to install a new page with a new theme on a site?

[ad_1]

I’ve been hired to put a new homepage on the site of a local company. I’m a designer by trade and so to test the site and show it to the client I made a dummy site with the intended homepage and theme that was hosted with a random free hosting service.

I now need to put that homepage onto the old site. Is the best way to do that to export the new homepage using WordPress’ Exporter, install the new theme on the old site and then import the page using the WordPress importer? I tried this once or twice before with dummy sites and it seemed to work okay but not great. Is there a better way to do this?

It should be noted as well the old site is very slow. It can sometimes take over a minute to load the old homepage and doing anything on the backend/dashboard takes forever. I tried this above process before but it kept failing. I think the importation/installation of the theme would timeout and as a result only half the CSS or PHP was loading. In the end I had to restore the site to a backup because the whole site went down temporarily for going over the resource limit of the server.

The client is supposedly moving to a WordPress specific plan for the server and I imagine that will speed things up but I wanted to know if anyone else had any other ideas or recommendations going forward.
