Can I make a New Theme without affecting my live webpage then make live when complete?

Hi

First things first, my knowledge extends to helping my daughter build a web page for a school project, so in a nut shell, I know enough to know that I know nothing. I have very limited knowledge with this regard.

I have taken it upon myself to try and revive our company web site. Long story short, it is ancient and has not been touched in 10 years.

Trying to edit it is daunting, and none of the wordpress tools work very well, as I am assuming the site is just too old. (Not touched for so long)

What I would like to do is use one of the “Twenty xx” themes, redesign our web page, and then make it live when I am done?

I really do not want to click the wrong button and destroy our live page, albeit old and out of date.
