Can multiple people work on a website without overwriting each others saves?

[ad_1]

Me and 2 friends are working on a site and it took us 3 hours to realize the reason some of our changes weren’t showing up on the site is because we kept overwriting each others stuff whenever we pressed save 🥲. Is there any way we can do like live collaboration like google docs style or other workarounds?

  1. You shouldn’t be able to edit a post or page while another user has its editor open. What edits are you making?

  2. Yes, if you’re talking about editing inside the WordPress admin, if you create a new user account for each person and have each person log in with their own account, then WordPress will stop you from editing content when someone else is already editing it. It will say person b is currently editing this page, would you like to take control?

Not sure if this works when editing general settings though. I think it’s only when editing content.

Also if you save over someone else’s content you can always restore it from the version history.

There is no real-time collaboration as far as I’m aware but there may be a plug-in for it.

  3. Keep in mind, if you’re all logged in under the same user account, the built in post locking does not apply.

Make sure you all have your own logins, and you won’t be able to edit the post at the same time, preventing overwriting.

  4. May I recommend something like slack? Communication will be your lifeline here. “I’m going into the customizer…” “Ok, my changes are saved and I’m out. Refresh.” “I’m adding content to ____ page. Everyone stay out for a bit.” That sort of thing. You’ll save yourselves a lot of grief. Then just make it clear who is doing what. It works. I have done a number of cooperative designs. Works well. Just don’t forget to refresh your screen before making changes.

Oh, and make sure cache is turned off.
