Hello, I apologize if this is basic knowledge. I am working with my church to try and update their website created in wordpress.org, but they can not get in because the person who created the website is no longer at our church. Is there a way around getting access?

Yes, if you have access to the hosting account, you should be able to get access. Do you know where the site is hosted?
To be on the safe side and assuming the site isn’t too big, take screenshots of every page.
Then contact the domain registrar to get control of your domain name. This will take a bit of time but once you are in control of your domain name, recreate the site.
If you are paying for hosting, then godaddy might talk to you as long as you can verify that your church is paying the bill and the address is the same as on the site.
So, get the screenshots, save the pictures, save as much text as you can. This way you don’t have to retype it and rebuild.
I assume that you are a small church. Once everything is back on track, talk to other churches to learn how they manage their website and copy the process.
Post additional info if you run into something else.
