Can’t remove “Created by WordPress” footer anymore- is this because of my theme?

[ad_1]

Hi all,

My site uses the “Placid” theme. A couple of years ago I was able to remove the footer that says “Proudly made in WordPress” or whatever, with copyright info etc.

I checked the other day and it has appeared again. I went into appearance>customize and looked for footer options but they have vanished. Now I see that they offer a “Placid Plus” theme for \~$30 which does offer footer options/control. So did my theme just decide to pull a bait and switch and now charges money to lose the footer?

Is there another way to remove that footer? I know you can do it with CSS but I hear that affects your SEO cause Google can flag it as shenanigans.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Is your website on the wordpress.com, or are you using some other hosting provider?

Did you contact that theme’s user support to help you out?

  2. If you are on the self-hosted WordPress, you can manually go in and edit any text there is anywhere. Just be aware that the next time the theme updates, you’ll have to do it again.

  3. Can’t help much… but… yes, they probably made it free to get people on board, and now want money. If it’s a good theme, then a one-off $30 is fair enough. Otherwise, you could consider switching themes.

If not… you may have to go through their theme files and find the footer (maybe in footer.php or functions.php). Then see if there’s a hook you can use to replace the footer text. Or create a child theme, and copy the footer into a matching sub-folder in there and edit it directly. It may overwrite (but this relies on the theme using good code practices).

  4. Hacky way to do it: find the css for that and do this: [https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_class_visibility.asp])

Can also mess with the font size, kerning, and other stuff to minimize the impact it has.

  5. Thanks all for your input! I ended up just finding the php for the footer in the theme and deleting it, and that seemed to work
