confused about how to work with existing live website

[ad_1]

Hey everyone!

I’m reaching out here from a bit of a desperate place and hoping for some guidance.

**Short Backstory**: I currently work as a receptionist/operations specialist at a hotel due to market situation I was simply not able to found job as a within my field – I’m an educated and experienced UI designer. When the opportunity arose to revamp our hotel’s ancient and glitchy website, I jumped at the chance. I’ve completed the design phase, keeping in mind the limitations of WordPress, the platform the current site is built on.

**Here’s where I need your expertise**: I’d like to challenge myself by transforming my prototype into a live WordPress version. However, I’m struggling with understanding how to work on a website that is already live and being used by people.

Could anybody please point me in the right direction for resources or guides on working with an existing, live website? Every search I make seems to lead me down the rabbit hole of starting new sites or making sites live, but I’m looking for beginner-friendly advice on an already established site.

Any help or guidance would be more than deeply appreciated! ❤️

Best regards, A very lost and overwhelmed designer

  1. Never work on a live website.

Ideally develop on a local installation. When finish you do what we call a ‘migration’ to the live website.

Or just get a new server, develop there and when you finish just point the original website domain to your new server.

  2. If the site is static, you can replace the entire site. You can do page by page, but that would be unproductive. You can use this opportunity to call your old clients to check the site for new information, images, and other exciting things.

You can break the site into chunks, considering each feature if the site is dynamic. Then, work on the design part offline on your computer. Then, migrate the features one by one. Then you can replace it.

If there is a dependency on old data and the database, you must hire a developer to write your migration script.
