Convert existing theme to a child?

[ad_1]

I’ve just (sort of) taken over a site. I was asked to do a couple of simple things with it. The owner is going on holiday for a couple of weeks and wanted some notices added to that effect – no problem. However, he said there were a few ‘other glitches’ without getting into specifics. So I backed everything up, updated whatever obviously needed updating and got the requested notices up and running, then had a rummage in the dashboard. Turns out it’s running a modified theme (Storefront is the original) with no child in place. It’s reporting that the theme needs to be updated but there are no updates available. It’s also reporting that some WooCommerce templates need updating, and that looks like it’s going to be a relatively painstaking process (I think this would also be easier if there was a child theme in place?) – I manage other sites that use Woo but I’ve never seen this before.

I’m wondering if there’s a way to add a vanilla copy of Storefront and somehow make the currently active theme into a child version of that? Then I could keep the underlying Storefront theme up-to-date, like a sane person would. I suspect that the site owner has fallen out with whoever modified the theme so I doubt there’s anything to be gained from trying to approach whoever that might be (the modded theme has no author credit).

Also weirdly, when running this site offline, core updates are not flagged in the dashboard? i.e. I used an older version of WordPress to create a home for it in MAMP and there’s no nag in the dashboard about needing to update to 6.2.2 (although the warning does show up in ‘System Status’). Is there some reason why someone would want to disable this warning function?
