Creating a simple Medium-esque site

[ad_1]

I essentially want to create a shared blogging site in the vein of something like [Medium.com])

I realise this sin’t necessarily going to be easy and I’m not asking for folks to essentially do the work for me, just trying to get any pointers.

So far I’m torn between WordPress, which I have some experience with, and Ghost, which I don’t but looks promising.

**Goals**

* Authors can submit/schedule articles to be published
* Easy post editing interface for Authors
* Multiple post types
* Authors can edit their own posts but not others
* Authors can edit their profile with some basic customisation
* Keep plugins to a minimum to ensure everything stays bloat-free
* Some basic profile customisation

I’m not expecting to create the “next Medium”, I’m just looking to create essentially a small news site that’ll let people follow different authors, comment on their articles and engage in discussion, and allow for some customisation of profiles. I’m not expecting it to be big as it’ll be a fairly niche site but wante

I know it’s possible in WordPress as I used to mod/admin a few dozen vBulletin sites which essentially had a lot of this functionality, but I’m wondering if Ghost is better. That said, I know that it might be less hassle to just go the WP route as it’s probably quicker to set up and I’m more familiar with it, I just want to avoid plugins and bloat. I’m also wary that Ghost uses Markdown which, while easy, isn’t super friendly for folks who’ve not used it and just want to write.

Would really appreciate any tips, recommendations for resources and anecdotes!
