I want to say that, as you can tell by the title, I’m not very technical. I made the mistake of deleting my categories without doing any real proper research on whether or not I could reinstate them afterward as I thought that was the case.
I’ve now deleted them and links on my page header go to 404. I’ve been told to contact my host (hostgator) but they’ve been awful with replying and are trying to charge me $100 to get a backup, i eventually managed to get one after saying I was going to move hosts but all they did was send me the file without any instructions on how to revert it to the backup..
My question is, can I restore order by creating my categories (without really understanding their real purpose) or am I going to have to pay HostGator more money than I already do for hosting to get my server reverted?

what did they provide you for a backup? Categories are stored in the DB, restoring the DB should be sufficient to restore the categories. How to specifically accomplish this is somewhat dependent on what you were supplied for a back up. Just an sql file? A full data set and sql file? Some proprietary backup file format?
You should move hosts anyway, hostgator is awful.
