Difference between a Theme and a Template in WordPress – NOOB

[ad_1]

Hey everyone, so I’ve been learning wordpress for 3 weeks now.

I know html, css, javascript and have built a few personal projects.

What is the difference between using themes and templates?

For example:

I download “Astra” theme, but also I download “Starter Templates” and select one of the limited templates they offer.

Then I go ahead and download Elementor plugin to edit the site.

My Questions;

1. Can I build a wordpress site without using any theme and just use a template?
2. Can I built a wordpress site using ONLY Astra theme without using a template from “starter templates”.
3. Can I build a wordpress site without both, a theme or template from “starter templates”?
4. Does the theme give you the structure or the design (colors, shapes) ?

I’m just confused.

I noticed you CAN’T delete all themes, there has to be atleast 1 active.

I was thinking buildidng a WP site from scratch just using elementor, not template or theme.

Any guidance will do, since theres a lot of plugins and themes and when I use different ones, when I try to use Elementor it cant.

Thanks

  1. A theme is site wide, a template is content wise.
You must have a theme active, inside the theme you will have one/many templates for specific needs + all the assets used by the website (css/js/whatever).

You can use a premade theme or build your own (or start from something in between, like underscores theme).

Elementor is a plugin, so you still need a basic theme. You can have a look at ‘hello’ theme.
