Does it matter what theme I use if I am going to customize it anyway?

[ad_1]

I am pretty new to WordPress, and I still can’t figure out if it matters which theme I use or not. I make 100% custom design, and I can’t really find any theme that would be an exact match. But, I am worried that there is something that I might not understand about how themes actually work. What do you think is the best way to go about it?

  1. Of course it matter. All themes come with scripts and styles that they used to build the theme components. If you’re loading these unnecessarily, you’ll be introducing additional overhead which will cause performance issues. Not just that, some will also bring a lot of features that’s you’ll never use, yet, they’ll be consuming the website resources regardless.

It’s best to go with a lightweight theme or starter theme if you’re going to build it all from the ground anyway.

  2. If you are customizing most of the site layout and pages, go ahead with the 2023 or 2024 default WP themes. They have the basic layout that allow you to set the base for whatever you are building, and are free of bloat. Plus, you are strongly advised to have at least one of these themes (even if unused) for testing and failsafe purposes. May as well use them.

  3. There is the magical BlankSlate that is truly blanked out and a fresh slate to build whatever you want without the theme getting in the way. I use it whether its a page builder site or a custom coded site.

  4. In addition to the good answers that you’ve been given, here’s an idea. If you want to have 100% customisation, perhaps create your own theme?

The thing is that a theme decides the entire direction of the website’s structure, and you’ll generally get what you pay for. The more basic the theme, the more you have to tailor it with plugins and custom code (using a child’s theme is recommended in such a case).

Another option is to use a theme-builder theme. I use Divi, which, in its advanced mode, is essentially a theme builder, and enormously flexible. But, as with every theme, it has its own restrictions.
