Does WordPress count as social media?

[ad_1]

There’s been a lot of talk lately of social media/social networking sites requiring photo ID. Because of my situation, I’m unable to get a photo ID. I don’t want to get off topic by explaining my situation here but you can search my post history and comment history if you’re curious.

So if social media sites do start requiring ID (whether by choice or by law), will wordpress fall into that category? I’m an aspiring writer and I just wanna know if I’m gonna need to look elsewhere (at other writing sites that doesn’t technically count as social media/social networking) for sharing my writing online.

By the way, I’m not sure if I chose the correct flair and I apologize if I didn’t.

  1. Just to clarify, “WordPress” commonly means two different things:

WordPress, the open source software project that lives at [WordPress.org])

    or

    [WordPress.com]) the managed WordPress host.

WordPress (the software) is unlikely to ever be considered “social media”. It is just software to build websites.

Now, some of the functionality you can add to WordPress (via plugins) could conceivably fall under the same sort of umbrella as social media sites if laws were passed to require ID. But I don’t think anyone knows if that will be the case at this point. FWIW, I think it’s mostly unlikely.

Now, [WordPress.com]) (the host) has some elements that would make it more likely to have to follow the same requirements as social media sites as far as ID laws. The [WordPress.com Reader]) for example.

That said, it will really depend on how laws are written. It’s entirely possible that someone could write a law saying that government ID was needed to post ANYTHING on the internet, and that would require all webhosts to collect ID any time someone signed up to host a website.

All in all, I think we have a long long way to go before we have to worry too much about this sort of a thing. Most of the conversation I’ve seen has been at the state level. And I would expect there to be pretty immediate court challenges to anything that was passed.
