Hi everyone!
I just recently got through a whole ordeal with envato via code Canyon and the author Extendons.
I bought a plug-in for my website from Extendons so that I could mix and match products and as soon as I installed and activated the plug-in it broke my product page and was completely unusable and actually forced me to reset all of my plugins and then finally I deactivated and removed it.
The same day I installed the plug-in I submitted a support request from Extendons and received nothing, not even an email acknowledging they’ve received my support request.
So I decided because I don’t have time to wait around and I installed a different plugin which was free and completely worked and solved my problem.
The next day I decided I would ask extendons for a refund since I had only just purchased the plug-in and it was totally defective and useless and then of course that’s when they responded and told me to speak to support and that I had to give them a chance to fix it before any refund would be honored. I told them that I already had sent in a support request and they said that they didn’t get it or they’re starting a new one for me in any case they were now paying attention to me because I wanted a refund.
They requested full admin FTP access to my website in order to fix their plug-in which I did not want to give them since speaking with them and seeing some of their reviews on their Facebook page told me that they were untrustworthy and I couldn’t afford to have them damage my site over a $29 plug-in.
They continued to refuse to give me any refund and said that if they didn’t get access to my website then there is no way I was ever getting a refund. Meanwhile I put in a refund request directly with envato and they quickly gave me a credit to my account which I thought was a good sign but I wanted a full refund as I really did not want to participate in the Envato marketplace anymore anyway.
Envato told me that if I could prove that the plug-in was defective with a detailed description, pictures or a video that they could then refund me based on that evidence. So I decided to take the extendons plug-in and do a video of me activating it and then showing my web page afterwards broken and not displaying any products and then I sent that to envato.
Even though envato promised me a full refund on good evidence they pivoted again and said that I needed to cooperate with extendons and give them a chance to fix the plug-in before they would give me any sort of refund and they told me to read their refund policy.
At this point I realize that not only was Extendons a terrible author and desperate to keep what money they could get so was envato.
At this point too it had been about a week of me going back and forth with them and I had grown tired and lost my patience and I threatened envato with a credit card charge back. They emailed me back the next day and said that just this one time they would make an exception for me and refund my money but the truth is they knew that if I did a chargeback I would win because I already had evidence to show the defectiveness of the software and they refunded me only because they didn’t want a black mark on their merchant account as I told them that they would get.
I not only recommend that everyone in the development community stay away from Extendons but envato and code Canyon as well as they all seem to operate with the same level of unprofessional desperation for money.
These are awful companies that try to take advantage of developers who they think won’t have the time or desire to charge back their money or otherwise fight them through their process. They depend on wearing you out and ignoring you in order to make most of their money. I’m a tenacious Scotsman, so they picked the wrong guy to push around.
Let this serve as a warning to anybody working on WordPress to never use these companies or their extensions and to always make sure that you can find some reviews on the products you’re buying and more importantly on the marketplace in which you are buying them from.
I made the mistake of trusting envato because their website was so professionally made and trusting in extendons because envato gave tgem five stars but there are actually no comments or real reviews which is something to be very wary of.
If you look up extendons Facebook page you will find numerous unanswered support requests and demands for refunds for defective plugins I only wish that I had investigated them before purchasing.
I will try to attach some screenshots of the communications between me, extendons and envato.
If you have any horror stories using envato or code Canyon please feel free to comment and leave them on this thread so that other people can avoid the trap that I’ve fallen into.
Thanks for reading and may all your websites be 503 free.
