Error while uploading .AVIF images to WordPress

Recently WordPress released 6.5.0 which adds support for .AVIF files.

We managed to uplaod .AVIF file sizes that are low in file size around 5kb, 30kb, 50kb (Without any error what so ever).

When uploading a .AVIF file of 687KB we get the error:
"Je hebt geen toestemming om dit bestandstype te uploaden." in the dutch version of WordPress, which translates to "You are not allowed to upload this file type". The file eventually does not get uploaded.

We've checked if there were limitations set to file sizes but this was not the case.

Any idea's what this could be? is it a bug or might there be something i'm missing?

  1. WordPress returns that error if the server doesn’t support avif. Not many hosts will support that image format yet.

You could check if imagemagick is enabled on the server and running at least PHP8.2. Otherwise I’d recommend sticking with jpeg or webp.
