First time buying a domain. I’m so confused. I need your help, please!

Hi everyone,

I’m so confused.

I just purchased a domain on WordPress. Let’s call it paiddomain/.com.

However, I can’t seem to make it a standalone website. The only option I have is to ATTACH it to any of my existing free domains. There’s no option for me to set is a primary since it’s not a website yet.

But when I try to click the option “Use a domain I own” and enter paiddomain/.com, it says: “paiddomain/.com is already registered on your site. Do you want to move it to this site?” and it just takes me back to the option where I can attach it to my free/existing websites.

How do I make paiddomain/.com stand on its own?

I’m really confused. Do I need to buy a website AND a domain to make it run as one?

Please help.

  1. WordPress isn’t the best place to purchase domains. Create an account with namecheap, transfer the domain over to there, and then you can edit the DNS to point to a webhosting server where your website sits.

You should still be able to manage the DNS records within WordPress, it’s just not that intuitive and easy to use.

  2. It sounds like you have a free website on wordpress.com and you also bought a domain name on wordpress.com. Is that it?
A domain name is just that, a name. That doesn’t include any type of website or hosting.
If you have any free website on wordpress.com you can point your domain to your free website, so you can access it using paiddomain.com instead of myfreedomain.wordpress.com
It’s not a good idea to let your hosting provider to register your domain name.

  3. You can manage DNS on [WordPress.com](http://WordPress.com) as well, so no need to transfer to another registrar.

A wordpress website is separate from domain. If you are starting from scratch, create a new wordpress site and attach your domain to it.

But please note that you can not use custom domain with FREE sites, so it has to be a paid plan at least starter plan.
