HELP – Can I develop on HostGator before connecting my domain?

[ad_1]

Ok so here’s the story, I’m redoing someone’s squarespace website and am using wordpress through hostgator. The domain is managed by a third party and currently points to squarespace’s servers (canceled the subscription but it ends at the end of the month). Now before I have the domain point to the hostgators server I want to finish developing the website. Is there any way to develop on hostgator without the domain being connected? I’m not really sure what to do.

I can develop the site locally but I hear transferring a wordpress site from your local machine to a server is a headache and may not work. Any other solutions? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

  1. You can develop the website using a ‘temporary’ domain name , hostgator support details on how to set this up here: [https://www.hostgator.com/help/article/temporary-url])

When you are ready to transition from the temporary domain to the permanent one, you will want to use a migration tool (or manually update site settings in the options table) to point the site to the permanent domain.
