How can I safely update plugins if I made modifications on them?

[ad_1]

Hello first of all I want to say I am pretty new in WordPress.
I am using several plugins like WooCommerce, TutorLMS and so on.
I have modified some files of these plugins, for example I changed menu of TutorLMS and translated some texts to my language which couldn’t auto translated or wrongly translated.
So some of these plugins have updates, I want to update them but I don’t want to break the website or lose my modifications. I also noticed that I shouldn’t have modified the real files and I should have overwritten them but here I am.
So what should I do? I am not sure but maybe I can get a full backup first and then update the plugins one by one, and see if my changes are gone, if they are gone I should put them back but then update loses its meaning, It is pretty confusing.

I appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

  1. Updating will absolutely lose your changes, so make sure you back up the plugin files first before you update them.

And if the plugins are properly built for translation, then translate the plugins using the correct way by going to translate.WordPress.org and submitting the translation updates for that plugin.

  2. You can’t. And you don’t modify plugins like that (and themes as well). Look into “Wordpress hooks” and translations files.

  3. Nope! It’ll be overwritten!

You’re going to have to figuree out another solution, because this will always be the case.

Try Loco Translate — it’s a bit confusing at first but once you understand how it works you can translate pretty much anything — including plugin files (without having to modify them.
