How did you determine how much to charge for maintenance monthly?

[ad_1]

I’ve been making websites as a side hustle to my 9 to 5. I’ve got 8 clients so far. I only charged once off and then put them on my reseller hosting plan. Costs me $17 per month. I’m fine with that but one of them asked me why I dont charge per month and it really got me thinking.

Now I update their sites and add content without charging, but I realize I can make some extra income from this. I want to charge but I’m pretty clueless on coming up with a justifiable figure.

For context, I’m in South Africa, not many people willing to pay for things like that and a bit scared if I charge they will find someone else. So just wanna hear how you came to the price you charge today.

  1. Rate x hours.

Find the typical comp rate, add a little bit because of your experience and quality of work and multiply by the time spent on each site each month. Just like any other service job.

  2. 99% of my clients are on my reseller account for hosting. So I make money no matter what.

I have no idea the standard of living in South Africa so is $17…with whatever profit $25-$30….is that a lot per month?

  3. + The price it cost you –> be aware that if you get a big client, at some point, you will use more bandwidth, need more power, upgrade your server.. –> it will cost you more.

So you take the actual cost, consider a bit of room for further upgrade and divide it by the number of clients you have.

+ Add the time you need to maintain those websites, at the price per hour you pay yourself

    = What you should charge.

Then you look at what other companies doing something similar actually charge.

–> find a balance between those two, considering your local market: the -if your actual or reachable clients are willing to pay something or not- part.

= What you can currently charge.

Small companies that are not real professionnals- web agencies deal with marketing people who understand the work we do (sometimes)- don’t understand what we do and might not really see the value here: you will need to explain and you better come with some numbers –> by creating content: did you bring them more visitor, for instance ?

    Etc.. you get the idea.

    Good luck 🤞
