When I post a link to say on facebook, it comes up with a default thumbnail relating to the template which I don’t know how to change. Can anyone advise please?

Install an seo plugin and use the “social” feature to specify a social image, title and desc.
It’s called an open graph image and you use the following meta tag to set it:
