Test with a local copy or a staging site. You could also use a plugin like [this](https://wordpress.org/plugins/theme-switcha). If your host has the capability, a staging site works best.
Staging sites can work very well, and many hosting companies offer this option!
I do recommend checking a good one that can help you with performance and security (backups) at the same time, in case you need to roll your site/staging site back to a previous state.
