How do you handle plugin licenses when a client decides to drop your services?

I’ve talked to some freelancers and they recommend making the client sign up and pay for all licenses that are required for a website, but that seems to put a lot of work on the client.

If our agency eats the cost of the plugins, we can include their monthly costs our monthly fee we charge the client. We can also then buy “25 site” plans and such to save on money and even pass some of these savings to the client who no longer needs to pay the full price for the individual site plan.

However, what happens when the client leaves?

Does the client still get access to our license keys for the plugins?

Does the client need to purchase the plugin for themselves now?

How do you / your agency handle offboarding a website client?

  1. As your service includes plug-ins, If they leave your services then they must buy their own license. In cases where you can get a much reduced rate then it makes sense to include your your license as an offer, but in most cases, I just get the client to buy the license directly

  2. In many cases, you will violate the terms of the plugin or theme developer. In some cases you will be fine. It’s a grey area for many. Which is why, the best practice would be to either have the client buy, or send them a separate invoice and buy on their behalf.
