How does the malware sneak in?

As a favour, a pro team created a WordPress site for me, but now I’m on my own and can’t ask them for support. I used to maintain the site in html and never encountered malware. Since WordPress, malware occasionally shows up in scan reports and I’d like to know how it finds its way in. The site isn’t interactive, has no sign-ups or vulnerabilities that I can see, and plug-ins are auto updated.
