How much to charge for maintenance costs?

[ad_1]

What do you guys recommend charging for updates & maintenance?

I’ve been building websites for over 10 years now and up until recently have avoided selling these plans. Usually, I just work on an hourly basis if the client asks me to update the site, but most of the time they don’t ask me to update and let the site backend gather dust which generally leads to a site being hacked down the line or something breaking when they update for the first time in a year.

Now, I have one basic maintenace package I offer which is £10 per month and I’ll keep the site maintained and up to date. My thinking here is that price will cover software costs (ACF Pro, Crocoblock etc) and even once a handful are on the package, I’m making a bit of profit too. It’s one of those packages they can’t really say no to.

My only thoughts are if I have an advanced package to upsell them to, what should I charge and what should I include? My concern here is if I include something like “2 hours of website edits every month” then clients will force themselves to use up that time and I’ll be spending a ton of time on stuff like this, which kinda puts me off.
