How you can use the footnotes is described here: https://projectdmc.org/documentation/article/footnotes-block/ – you must first select a footnote so that the block can be used.
But I don’t have an option to select them. On wordpress.com it looks like this:

It just isn’t there. Hence my question how to enable it – and the documentation doesn’t say anything about it.
OK, it is there it is just elsewhere in the menu because it is called differently in this language.
