I can’t get WordPress to replace my hyphens with dashes

[ad_1]

Hi!

I would love for my WordPress to replace — with an endash and — with an em dash. I did some googling and it seems like that should be the default behavior. In fact, all the search results I found were people with the OPPOSITE problem I have: people trying to DISABLE this behavior. I in fact would like to figure out why it’s not working in my installation in the first place.

So I have my own custom .Wwordpress installation on a server I control (I have a disease where I enjoy setting up stuff directly in Linux even if I suck at it ;P). I’ve done very limited customizing. The only plugin I’m running is Post Views Counter. I’m using the Dark Minimalist Blogger theme with some very small manual changes I made (I basically just removed the sidebar from the post view, that’s it).

I looked at some of the obvious problems, as suggested to me by the Gemini chatbot (these things seem to be pretty useful for technical stuff). So I made sure there’s nothing in the functions.php of the theme that disables wptexturize (there isn’t), and I made sure there’s nothing in the settings that disables this behavior (my settings do not mention automatic formatting or anything like it.)

I’m using WordPress 6.4.3.

Thanks for any help!
