Should they overlap? Which one should I care about more? And what if it the keyword is in the title but not in the first two sentences b/c why would i repeat it so soon after the title. It feels jammed in just to get a checkmark. Thx.

The focus keyword is a word or phrase that you’d like to rank for. Rankmath uses it to help guide the advice they provide for optimizing that unique page.
IMHO tags can be very easily overused and actually harm your optimization efforts by creating lots of very thin, low value tag pages. I would be careful with them. For example – a tag that is only assigned to one post creates a very low value tag page with just that post on it. You probably don’t want your focus keyword and a tag with the same phrase in that scenario, for example.
At this stage of your journey it sounds like you’re still learning, so I’d focus on creating good content and learning about the nuances and intricacies of SEO as you go. Use the focus keyword as a rough guide to help you optimize, and don’t overuse tags. You can even get away with not using them at all and just using categories to group your content, which is what we usually do, although of course there are exceptions to everything and some industries might benefit from tags.
