5 days after finding out that Jetpack now considers non-profits as ‘commercial’ I’m still finding myself astounded that while 501c3 status is good enough for the US Government, it’s not good enough for Automattic … and that donations are now ‘making money’. Yeah, maybe if you’re the American Red Cross or stuff, but, most non-profits and 501c3s are little things trying to help their communities that jump for joy when a fundraising event makes 3 grand. Oh, and all that, goes immediately back into the non-profit….
What boggled my mind even more was a response to a question on the Jetpack support forum giving one of the reasons that a library system who was asking the question of why they were considered ‘commercial’. The plugin support guy said that it was because the library ‘sells library memberships’ (I followed the link to the library’s website, it’s a public library system, they don’t sell cards, you do have to fill out a form, and, sometimes in libraries there is a charge for a replacement, but, in no way are cards ‘sold’).
Dumb, so very narrow vision and dumb. There is no library in the United States that could ever be considered to ‘make money’ in any way. So very dumb.
