Since 2021 I’ve been building a blog hosted on [wordpress.com]). After a year of making content, I decided to stop paying for my subscription and focus on other things for a while. A year later, I decided that I really wanted to use this website as a piece on my portfolio (For keyword research, SEO, etc) and decided to purchase my subscription again. Previously I had downloaded the site backup file on [wordpress.com]) (Although now I’m realizing this may have not included the database files, which I didn’t even know where a thing at the time…)
The issue is, when I went to reactivate my site, none of the previous plugins or themes were listed anymore, and I would have had to spend probably 10 hours or so fixing up the format and colors, etc. Additionally, tons of previous images weren’t loading (due to plugins), and I wasn’t confident that I would be able to fix all of this because I don’t have very much technical knowledge at all.
So, I decided to try the ‘import’ feature on [wordpress.com]), foolishly thinking that I might be able to just try and upload the original files, and undo it if it didn’t work. Well, I tried to upload it, and now I’m getting the dreaded ” There has been a critical error on this website. ”
Everything is broken. I can’t access my plugin menu, the menu is showing no posts, and you can’t even access the website. [https://growkaru.com/])
I tried clicking on the link provided here: [https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/faq-troubleshooting/]).
But, I have to be honest. This is all over my head. I tried installing phpMyAdmin, but I can’t even figure out where the executable is in the folder. Even if I did download it, I have no idea where to start, and some videos I’ve watched have suggested that I need to download additional programs to even properly us phpMyAdmin. What’s more, my server is hosted on [wordpress.com]), not locally, so I’m not even sure it would work?
All in all, I’m just completely overwhelmed and panicking right now that 1000’s of hours might have just gone down the drain. Despite my efforts to make a backup, I didn’t have enough cs knowledge to even know what I should be backing up, apparentely. I’m just feeling defeated and completely overwhelmed with the amount of information out there.
Would anyone be kind enough to streamline this for a layman like me? This is very important for me and my future, and I would really appreciate any support.
Also, I’ll be sure to backup the database next time (if it isn’t already backed up in the file I downloaded?) I’m definitely not making that mistake again.
