Image gets too large when text is added over it

Hi! Confused beginner here. When I added text over my image, the image got way too large. When I tried resizing the image, WordPress crops part of it out. The text is very small so I don’t know why WP makes the photo so huge when I attempt to use this feature. How do I fix this?
