Images have disappeared from Media Library after latest update of WP

I found other posts on this and they suggest I delete the wp-content/uploads/.htaccess to fix this problem. But, I can't find this file. I have .htaccess. Is it the same thing? I'm not a pro, as you can tell. Is there any other way to fix this problem? in the meantime, I can upload the pictures I lost, but this is not long term solution.

    Ensure your file permissions are correct and clear any caching plugins or server caches
