In this Day and Age do you use offsite backups ?

[ad_1]

Do you know how most hosting providers now provide backups, some of them even offer hourly backups
In this day and age, do you use any of the major backup plugins to create offsite copies of your website, synched to Dropbox or OneDrive or Google cloud etc etc ?

I mean, in the highly unlikely event that even your hosting backups get compromised.
Do you still bother with such an arrangement ?

Because for me, it depends, on anything to do with accepting credit cards and having customers, Yes, but for most other brochure type websites, it is not worth the effort, or is it ?

  1. Of course. If my host fucks up, then I will still have a backup. I use a Hetzner storage box and Updraft to send a zip of the files and db over to their servers on an automated basis, even though WP Engine provides daily backups. This protects me from WP Engine if anything catastrophic happens.

  2. Yes, backups to backups.

On occasion, the host-provided backup files failed to restore, even with tech support. Thankfully, I had cloud backups from which I was able to perform a fresh install.

Never hang your hammock higher than you’re willing to fall.

  3. Absolutely. Redundantly. Storage is cheap. Ransomware can take months to trigger. Malware and unattended file or database corruption can take more than 30 days to be discovered. So why not?

  4. Uhhhh, you should ONLY be using offsite backups (unless you’re making more than one backup). A backup stored on the same server as the website is not a backup.

You aren’t allowed to store credit card information, due to PCI rules.

  5. Yes, of course. It’s always a good idea to have off site backups. You never know if something happens, so it’s best to be on the safe side.

  6. Especially in this day and age

I do multiple layers of backup

    – Wp vivid to s3 compatible storage
    – wp vivid to google drive (not always)
    – server level application backup.

Most sites that do not have many regular updates I keep the to weekly or even monthly

    Ones that do, daily backup

  7. i use restic for local backups and rclone for offsite backups. i tar the restic repository and encrypt it with gpg before punting it off to a few remote locations once a day.

  8. Yes. Surely it needs to be done. Your hosting provider may sometimes block your account for policy violations. Hetzner sometimes does it. I use tar file to compress files and database and use rclone to save it into google drive.
