Is a custom site from scratch ever started with a theme?

So i’m going through a really stressful experience with a TOP web designer agency.

I signed up to get a custom website for my business along with a 1 year retention on SEO, I paid for the website up from, close to $8000 CAD.

I was promised the website build to take 6-10 weeks. At 10 weeks, I had zero communication and not even a prototype. Long story short I reached out a few times, and got the run around about staff being sick, blah blah, and they’d get the prototype to me by end of week. 3 weeks past, nothing. Had to really lay into them how I felt, and they said they’d fix the issue.

Finally today, they delivered the ‘prototype’ and I already had an intuition this would be rushed together. I opened it on my phone, and right away i was shocked how underwhelming the design was, I felt a fiver hire could of done this, or better.

I hopped on a phone call with the CEO and expressed my extreme concern. He was arrogant and said this is a custom website, not a theme. I viewed the page source, it says ‘salient theme’ with 2-3 sections the exact same lay out as the theme, they just put some of my photos in there.

This isn’t a custom website right, and I should run from these guys?

  1. Salient is a theme that’s been around a while.

If you’ve stumped up 8k, I’d think about how you might get some (or all) of that money back.

Did you sign a contract? What did they agree to deliver for that money?
