Is webdesigning with WordPress just to take a good looking theme and adjust a bit?

Fairly new to WP. Been making some sites with HTML, CSS and JS prior. Always made mockups in Figma beforehand based on research and experimenting.

Trying to learn WP, i am really getting the impression that people just find a theme that looks good, installs it and then adjusts it with their own text, logo etc. It doesnt feel like designing to me, as much as copy pasting what works, without necessarily knowing why it works.

Also with things like “Patterns”, videoes say stuff like “And then i go in here and add this because it looks good”. And yea, it does look good, but it makes it seem like webdesign is just made on the spot by feel. Not by thought or research, which is what i learned in school.

Is that really how it is? I wanted this line of work, because i liked the idea of creating my own pages. Being creative. But if this is what everyone else does, then they are working much faster and easier than me, and still getting professional pages (just with the risk of similar websites existing, which end-users probably will never notice regardless).
