Looking for a theme to customize

[ad_1]

Hey all!

I’m on the hunt for a theme that I can customize style and content-wise with code and plugins. I’ll be adding custom post types and advanced custom fields and changing the styles, but I don’t want to start entirely from scratch. I’m looking for something that is easy to work with and is very considerate of users’ accessibility needs.

For context, I’m a designer with a limited background in front-end and wordpress development. I don’t know how to do everything, but I am capable of editing the site locally and editing the html, css and php to create a custom theme. In the past I’ve used really stripped down starter-themes, but that would take too much work for my current project. I need a mixture of plug-and-go with existing wp features and plugins to make this work. I’ve looked around quite a bit now and am having a hard time telling what’s a good choice and what’s too complicated for me to use.

**Based off that, what are your recommendations for a starter theme? Do you have any favorites?**

I know there’s no way I could have mentioned all the relevant points necessary to answer my question here, so feel free to ask follow-up questions if I’ve left out an important detail or two.

Thanks!!

  1. Astra may be a good option for this. It’s got a million settings in the customizer and also works with the default block page builder (or if you’re not worried about performance, you can use the page builder of your choice). Or you can download a child theme and code as you like from there.

If you want to play with full-site editing, you can do a lot with the default WP theme twenty twenty-two as a base as well.

Both of these are good performance-wise and fairly easy to use and modify.

  2. GeneratePress all the way. The paid version includes extra customiser options, elements(very good and very powerful) and a powerful typography section too.

The free version is good too and may be with enough for you, but with the pro version and Generateblocks/Kadence Blocks/something else, you likely won’t need to edit any code directly.
